3 Tips for Dealing With Mattress Smells

At the end of a long day, it’s nice to be able to fall back into a comfortable mattress and doze off. It helps if the mattress has just the right firmness and conforms to the body to create the ideal sleeping position. But even mattresses that meet all of these requirements can become a nightmare when they start to smell. There are lots of different reasons why this sleeping space may smell and a couple of solutions that are well worth trying.

Air It Out

When it’s time to change the sheets, don’t just take the old ones off and toss the new ones on. Instead, remove the mattress from the bed and take it to a place in the home that offers lots of air flow and if possible, a little bit of sunshine. The sun can help deal with some of the germs that could be causing the smell. The air circulation can help some of those smells dissipate. This solution doesn’t cost anything and is often the first step in getting rid of pesky smells.

Use Baking Soda

Baking soda is a low-cost solution. Once every month or two, sprinkle baking soda on the surface of the mattress. Be sure to rotate the mattress frequently to ensure that all sides are being reached. Leave the baking soda there for about an hour. Then, grab the vacuum cleaner and remove all of the baking soda from the surface. Baking soda works to absorb odors that may be lingering on the mattress.

Try Fabric Refreshers

Fabric refreshing sprays are another great idea as they don’t cost much and can leave the mattress and the room with a fresh and clean smell. Spray the surface of the mattress liberally, without holding the nozzle too close to the surface. Be sure to let everything dry before putting on a clean set of sheets.

If a mattress has a constant chemical smell, it might be time to return it to the manufacturer and get something new. There are some mattresses that will retain that smell indefinitely. With others, the smell may only linger for the first couple of weeks. You can click here to read reviews on various mattresses, including those that have received complaints because of the smell.
